A device provides power for each interface. Even though an interface is idle, it consumes the same power as working interfaces. This wastes power. After the Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) function is configured on an electrical interface, the system reduces the power on the interface when the interface is idle and restores the power when the interface starts to transmit data. This reduces power consumption in the system.

EEE function is enabled on the electrical interface.
By default, the EEE function is disabled on an electrical interface.
The EEE function takes effect only when it is configured on both ends of a link.
