Configuring HVPN

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring HoVPN, configure basic BGP/MPLS IP VPN functions. For details, see Configuring Basic BGP/MPLS IP VPN Functions.

Context

HVPN has two networking modes: HoVPN and H-VPN.
  • On an HoVPN, SPEs advertise default routes to UPEs. The UPE sends VPN service packets to SPEs and does not need to learn specific routes to NPEs. In this manner, route isolation is achieved. As SPEs advertise only default or summarized routes to UPEs, devices with low route management capabilities can be used as UPEs. Therefore, the HoVPN mode requires lower network deployment cost than the H-VPN mode.

  • On an H-VPN, SPEs advertise specific routes to UPEs. SPEs serve as route reflectors (RRs), and UPEs serve as RR clients. UPEs receive specific routes from SPEs and determine which routes to use based on the destination addresses of packets. UPEs obtain detailed routes from SPEs. Therefore, the H-VPN mode provides more refined route management and traffic forwarding control than the HoVPN mode.
