Configuring a VE Interface

Context

You can use VE interfaces when other link layer protocols need to be carried by the Ethernet protocol.

Only the S5720-HI, S5730-HI, S5731-H, S5731-S, S5731S-H, S5731S-S, S5732-H, S6720-HI, S6730-H, S6730S-H, S6730-S, and S6730S-S support VE interface configuration.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface virtual-ethernet ve-number

A VE interface is created and the VE interface view is displayed.

  3. Configure a VE interface based on actual requirements.

    • Configure the VE interface to work in Layer 2 mode.

      Run portswitch

The working mode of the VE interface is changed from Layer 3 mode to Layer 2 mode.

By default, a VE interface works in Layer 3 mode.

    • Configure a VE sub-interface.

You need to create a VE sub-interface when configuring an L2VPN to access to an L3VPN.

      1. Run ve-group ve-group-id { l2-terminate | l3-access }

A Layer 2 or Layer 3 VE interface is created.

      2. Run quit

        Return to the system view.

      3. Run interface virtual-ethernet ve-number.subnumber

A VE sub-interface is created and the VE sub-interface view is displayed.

Verifying the Configuration

  • Run the display interface virtual-ethernet [ ve-number | main ] command to check the status and statistics of the VE interface.
