Configuring Alarm Thresholds for Multicast Index Usage

Pre-Configuration Tasks

Before configuring alarm threshold for multicast index usage, configure basic multicast functions.

Context

Multicast packets are forwarded based on multicast forwarding entries in either Layer 2 or Layer 3 multicast mode. Multicast forwarding entries occupy independent indexes on the switch. A high index usage indicates more multicast forwarding entries and therefore higher load of the switch. If all indexes for multicast forwarding entries are used up, some multicast packets cannot be forwarded.

After alarm thresholds are set, the switch sends a trap when the index usage reaches the upper threshold or falls below the lower threshold. You can monitor multicast index usage based on the alarms.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run multicast threshold-alarm upper-limit upper-limit lower-limit lower-limit

The alarm thresholds for multicast index usage are set.

When the multicast index usage reaches upper-limit, an alarm is generated, indicating that the multicast forwarding entries will consume all indexes. When the multicast index usage falls below lower-limit, a clear alarm is generated, indicating that the multicast index usage is restored to the acceptable range.

By default, the upper alarm threshold is 85%, and the lower alarm threshold is 75%.

Follow-up Procedure

  • Run the display multicast threshold-alarm command to view the alarm thresholds for multicast index resource usage.
