Application Scenarios for IGMP

IGMP runs between member hosts and directly connected multicast routers to manage and maintain multicast group membership. To forward multicast data from multicast sources to receivers, multicast routers must run Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) to set up forwarding paths. Figure 1 illustrates a typical IGMP network topology.

The following solutions can be used in IGMP application.

Solution

Member Hosts

Interfaces Connected to Member Hosts

All Routers on the Network

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through ASM.

Enable IGMPv1 or IGMPv2.

Enable IGMPv1 or IGMPv2.

Enable PIM-DM or PIM-SM.

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through SSM.

Enable IGMPv3.

Enable IGMPv3.

Enable PIM-SM.

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through SSM mapping.

Enable IGMPv1 or IGMPv2.

Enable IGMPv3 and IGMP SSM mapping, and configure source-group mapping.

Enable PIM-SM.
