IP Multicast Basics

IP multicast enables point-to-multipoint data transmission. A multicast source sends only one copy of data, which is copied and distributed on network nodes as far from the multicast source as possible. The multicast data is sent only to the receivers that have requested the data.

In this chapter, the word "router" and the router icon used in figures refer to a conventional router or Layer 3 switch.
