Application Scenarios for MLD Snooping

Networking Description

In Figure 1, HostA and HostC on the LAN want to receive video data from the multicast source on the IPv6 PIM network. To prevent broadcast of multicast data on the LAN, MLD snooping needs to be configured on the Layer 2 multicast device (switch). The switch then can accurately forward multicast data on the Layer 2 network, preventing waste of bandwidth and information leakage.

Deployment

Perform the following configuration to enable accurate multicast data forwarding on the network shown in Figure 1:

  • Enable IPv6 PIM and MLD on the Layer 3 multicast device (router) to forward multicast data to user segments.
  • Enable MLD snooping on the Layer 2 device (switch). The switch then creates and maintains a Layer 2 multicast forwarding table to forward multicast data to specified users.
  • Enable MLD snooping proxy on the switch to prevent the router from processing redundant MLD messages.
