Summary of IPv4 PIM Configuration Tasks

Table 1 lists IPv4 PIM configuration tasks.

Table 1 PIM configuration tasks
Task Description

Configuring IPv4 PIM-DM

PIM-DM uses the ASM model to provide multicast services. The configuration is simple, but multicast data is periodically broadcast. PIM-DM applies to small networks with densely distributed group members.

Configuring IPv4 PIM-SM

PIM-SM uses the ASM and SSM models to provide multicast services. In the ASM model, a multicast distribution tree (MDT) is set up based on receivers' request to join multicast groups. PIM-SM needs to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, and register multicast sources. The ASM model applies to the large network where members are widely distributed. In the SSM model, PIM-SM sets up an SPT between a multicast source and members and does not need to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, or register multicast sources. The SSM model applies to networks where users know the multicast source locations and directly request multicast data from a specified multicast source.
