Licensing Requirements and Limitations for PoE

Licensing Requirements

PoE is a basic feature of a switch and is not under license control.

Feature Support in V200R019C10

Whether switches support PoE depends on the hardware. Non-PoE switches cannot be changed to PoE switches through software upgrades. A switch that meets any of the following conditions is a PoE switch:
  • The device name contains PWR or PWH.
  • The switch is released in V200R013C02 or later versions and provides new downlink interface types UM, P or U.

Only the following switch models support the PoE function:

S2720-EI, S5720-LI, S5735-L, S5735S-L, S5735S-L-M, S5720S-LI, S5720-EI, S5720-HI, S5730-HI, S5720-SI, S5735-S, S5735-S-I, S5720I-SI, S5730-SI, S5730S-EI, S5731-H, S5731-S, S5731S-S, S5732-H, and S6720-SI

Feature Limitations

PoE Power Supplies Supported by the Switch
  • In the versions earlier than V100R005, all PoE power supplies are 250 W non-constant current power supplies. When two power supplies are used, they are used for power redundancy, but do not offer power.
  • In V100R005 and later versions, PoE power supplies include 250 W and 500 W constant current power supplies. When two 250 W or 500 W constant current power supplies are used, the power supplies can be used for power redundancy and offer power at the same time.
  • In V200R002 and later versions, PoE power supplies include 250 W, 500 W, 580 W, and 1150 W constant current power supplies. When two 580 W or 1150 W constant current power supplies are used, the power supplies can be used for power redundancy and offer power at the same time.
  • In V200R007 and later versions, PoE power supplies include 250 W, 500 W, 580 W, 650 W, and 1150 W constant current power supplies. When two 580 W, 650 W, or 1150 W constant current power supplies are used, the power supplies can be used for power redundancy and offer power at the same time.
  • In V200R013 and later versions, 1000 W constant current PoE power supplies are available. These power supplies can be used in the same switch as 580 W and 1150 W constant current power supplies. When two constant current power supplies are used, these power supplies can be used for power redundancy and provide power at the same time.
  • Downlink electrical interfaces of PoE switches provide PoE power and each interface supports a maximum of 200 m power supply distance. The PoE switch can transmit both current and data on a pair of signal cables.

  • For the available PoE power, maximum number of ports, and power module type provided by different PoE switch models, see "Chassis" in the Hardware Description of the specific switch model. PoE switches have PWR or PWH in the product names. For details about PoE power supply configuration, see "Power Supply Configuration" of the specific switch model.

PoE function
  • The switch supports power supply capability negotiation using the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP).
  • The switch supports perpetual power supply and fast power-on.
  • If a switch supports PoE, its PoE feature is not affected after it joins a stack.

Restrictions on the PoE function
  • All PoE models support PoE perpetual power supply, which protects the PDs connected to a PoE device from power failures when the PoE device restarts without being powered off using the reboot command or has the software version upgraded. However, for the PoE models of the S2720-EI, S5700-LI, S5700S-LI, S5710-C-LI, S5720-LI, S5720S-LI, S2750-EI, S5710-EI, S5720-EI, S5720-SI, S5720I-SI, S5720-HI, S5710-HI, S5730-HI, S5730-SI, S5730S-EI, S5732-H, and S6720-SI series, after rebooting, a PD will be powered off and then on when all the following conditions are met:
    1. The PD can be powered on successfully.
    2. Forcible power supply has been enabled on the port connected to the PD or any of the other three ports that share the same PSE chip with this port, but the forcible power supply configuration has not been saved before the reboot.
  • If the switch power is sufficient but PDs cannot be powered on, try to use the poe force-power command to forcibly power on the PDs connected to interfaces.
  • On the S5720-16X-PWH-LI-AC, S5720-28X-PWH-LI-AC, S5720I-SI, S5735-S-I, S5730-HI, S5732-H, and S6720-SI, different power supply modes are mutually exclusive on PoE interfaces.
  • In V200R011C00 and earlier versions, if you run the poe af-inrush enable command in the system view to set the power supply mode to PoE on interfaces and then run the poe bt-inrush enable command in the interface view to set the power supply mode on this interface, the system displays a message to ask you to clear the poe af-inrush enable command configuration. In V200R011C10 and later versions, if you run the poe af-inrush enable command in the interface view to set the power supply mode to PoE on this interface and then run the poe bt-inrush enable command in the interface view to set the power supply mode on this interface, the poe af-inrush enable command configuration is automatically overwritten.

Maximum PoE power supply distance

The maximum PoE power supply distance supported by the S5720-28X-PWH-LI-AC, S6720-32C-PWH-SI-AC, and S6720-32C-PWH-SI is 200 m. The maximum PoE power supply distance supported by other switch models is 100 m.

When S5720-28X-PWH-LI-AC, S6720-32C-PWH-SI-AC, and S6720-32C-PWH-SI switches support a maximum PoE power supply distance of 200 m, the following restrictions apply:
  • The switches can only be connected to APs of the specified models, including AP7052DN/AP7152DN, AP6052DN, AP8082DN/AP8182DN, AP7060DN, and AP7052DE.
  • Supported PoE power supply standards include 60 W PoE++, 30 W PoE+, and 15.4 W PoE. There is a 5 W power loss per 100 m.
  • The maximum PoE power supply distance can reach 200 m only when the following network cables are used.
