Usage Scenario

On an NG MVPN, PIM-SM MDTs can be set up in either of the following modes:

• PIM-SM MDT setup across the public network: PIM-SM MDTs are transmitted to remote PEs through the public network. The advantage is that VPN Rendezvous Points (RPs) can be deployed on PEs or CEs. The disadvantage is that the switchover from the rendezvous point tree (RPT) to the shortest path tree (SPT) may occur on the public network. Therefore, PEs need to maintain many states. Currently, a VPN RP can only be a static RP.
• PIM-SM MDT setup not across the public network: PIM-SM MDTs are not transmitted to remote PEs across the public network. The advantage is that PIM-SM MDTs are not transmitted across the public network. Therefore, the switchover from the RPT to the SPT does not occur on the public network tunnel, simplifying PE processing and reducing the status maintained by PEs. A VPN RP can be a static RP or a dynamic RP. If a VPN RP is deployed on a CE, an MSDP peer relationship must be established between the CE and PE.
  By default, PIM-SM RPTs cannot be set up.
• If you want to set up PIM-SM RPTs across the public network, run the rpt-spt mode command.
• If you want PIM-SM RPTs to be set up not across the public network, run the spt-only mode command.

Precautions

PEs in the same MVPN instance must use the same PIM-SM MDT setup mode.
