Overview of IPv6 Address Allocation and Management

Definition

IPv6 address allocation means the allocation of IPv6 addresses/prefixes to clients in either of the following ways:

  • A DHCPv6 server allocates IPv6 addresses/prefixes to DHCPv6 clients.
  • Neighbor Discovery (ND) is used to allocate stateless addresses.

IPv6 address management allows a BRAS to use address pools to manage IPv6 addresses, including allocating and renewing addresses, reclaiming DNS server addresses, and providing a gateway address for access users.
