Service process of Telemetry dynamic subscription

Dynamic telemetry subscription indicates that a collector functioning as a client initiates a connection to a device functioning as a server to collect data.

To monitor an interface for a period of time, you can configure dynamic telemetry subscription. When you are not interested, disconnect the connection. The subscription is automatically canceled and the configuration is not restored. This avoids long-term load on the device and simplifies the interaction between the user and the device.

Telemetry is a device feature in a narrow sense while is a closed automatic O&M system in a board sense. This system consists of network devices, collector, analyzer, and controller and is divided to the NMS side and device side, as shown in Figure 1.

Telemetry NMS side and device side operate collaboratively to complete Telemetry dynamic subscription through the following steps.
  1. Performing dynamic configuration: After the gRPC service is configured for devices that support Telemetry, the collector delivers dynamic configurations to the devices to collect data.

  2. Pushing data sampled: A network device reports data collected to the collector based on collector configurations. The collector receives and stores the data.

  3. Reading data: The analyzer reads the data sampled stored in the collector.

  4. Analyzing data: The analyzer analyzes the data sampled and sends the analysis results to the controller, so that the controller can manage and optimize the network.

  5. Adjusting network parameters: The controller delivers network configurations to the network devices that need to be adjusted. After the configurations take effect, the devices report new data sampled to the collector. The telemetry NMS side analyzes whether the network optimization meets the expectation. After the optimization is complete, the entire service process is closed.

If the connection where Telemetry dynamic subscription resides is disconnected (for example, the device performs an active/standby switchover or restarts), the device automatically cancels the subscription and does not sample or push data. In addition, the configuration cannot be restored until the collector delivers a connection request again.
