MBGP is a multiprotocol extension to BGP.
If a multicast source and its receivers are located in different ASs, a multicast distribution tree must be built across the ASs. MP-BGP can be used to transmit routing information between ASs to implement inter-AS multicast services.
MP-BGP is an enhanced BGP. BGP applies only to unicast routing. By adding capabilities to BGP, MP-BGP allows BGP to provide routing information for multiple routing protocols, including multicast.
MP-BGP maintains both unicast routes and multicast routes, stores them in different routing tables, and keeps unicast routing information and multicast routing information separate from each other.
MP-BGP builds a unicast routing topology different from a multicast routing topology.
Most unicast routing policies and configuration methods supported by BGP can be applied to multicast, and MP-BGP maintains unicast routes different from multicast routes based on the routing policies.
MP-BGP applied to multicast is called MBGP.
