(Optional) Suppressing Report and Done Messages

Context

The MLD protocol maintains group memberships based on periodic Query and Response messages. When multiple members join the same group, they send identical Report messages to the MLD router. When hosts leave a group, they send identical Done messages. To conserve bandwidth, configure suppression of Report and Done messages on the switch.

After MLD message suppression is configured, the switch sends a Report message only when the first member joins a multicast group and a Done message only when the last member leaves the multicast group.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run vlan vlan-id

    The VLAN view is displayed.

  3. Run mld-snooping report-suppress

Report and Done message suppression is enabled.

When configuring MLD message suppression, pay attention to the following:

    • After MLD message suppression is enabled in a VLAN, IPv6 Layer 3 multicast functions (such as MLD and IPv6 PIM) cannot be enabled on the corresponding VLANIF interface.
    • MLD snooping proxy and message suppression cannot be configured in the same VLAN.
    • The switch can suppress duplicate Report messages even when MLD message suppression is disabled. The default suppression time is 10 seconds. To change the suppression time, run the mld-snooping suppression-time suppression-time command. If suppression-time is set to 0, all membership packets are forwarded immediately.
    • If multicast VLAN replication is configured, the MLD message suppression function cannot be enabled in user VLANs.
