IPv6 PIM enables multicast data to be forwarded on an IPv6 network. IPv6 PIM can work in multiple modes to suit different scenarios. Table 1 lists IPv6 PIM configuration tasks.
Task | Description |
---|---|
IPv6 PIM-DM uses the any-source multicast (ASM) model to provide multicast services. The configuration is simple, but multicast data is periodically broadcast. IPv6 PIM-DM applies to the small LAN where members are densely distributed. |

IPv6 PIM-SM uses the ASM and source-specific multicast (SSM) models to provide multicast services. In the ASM model, multicast distribution tree (MDT) setup is triggered by receivers actively joining the multicast group. IPv6 PIM-SM needs to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, and register with a multicast source. The ASM model applies to large networks where members are widely distributed. In the SSM model, IPv6 PIM-SM only needs to set up an SPT between a multicast source and members. The SSM model applies to networks where users know the multicast source location and order multicast data from a specified multicast source. |
