Installing Licenses

Prerequisites

You have obtained and uploaded the license file to the device.

This section describes how to install a license on the CLI. For details about how to install a license using the web system, see the Web-based Configuration Guide of the corresponding version.

Procedure

The license needs to be activated for the first time.
Run the license active file-name command to activate the license. If the following information is displayed, the license is activated successfully.

Info: The license is being activated. Please wait for a moment.
Info: Succeeded in activating the license file on the master board.

The current license file needs to be updated.
Run the license active file-name command to activate the license.

If the specifications of the new license file are lower than those of the current license file (some functions are authorized in the current license file, but not in the new license file, or the new license file allows fewer resources than the current one), the system displays a message asking you whether to continue. If you choose N, the system retains the current license file. If you choose Y, the system uses the new license file. In this case, check whether the configuration items required by services exist in the new license file. If not, apply for a correct license file and activate it. Otherwise, services may be interrupted due to lack of dependent license configuration items after the device is restarted.

Follow-up Procedure

Most licenses take effect immediately after being activated, without the need of restarting the switch. A few licenses take effect only after the switch is restarted. For details, see License Control Items. If a license does not have the description similar to "The license takes effect only after the switch is restarted", the license takes effect immediately after being activated.
If the license file cannot be activated, handle the problem according to License Fails to Be Activated.
