Example for Configuring the Association Between Bit Errors and IGP Routes

Networking Requirements

When a link's BER exceeds a certain threshold, the link's interface reports link quality information. IS-IS adjusts the interface's cost value based on the link quality information, switching routes to a link with a smaller BER.

As shown in Figure 1:

  • Four devices run IS-IS.

  • Four devices are all Level-1-2 devices.

  • The primary link of IS-IS is DeviceA -> DeviceC -> DeviceD (that is, link T), and its backup link is DeviceA -> DeviceB -> DeviceD. In normal circumstances, traffic between DeviceA and DeviceD travels along the primary link. Assume that DeviceA's GE 0/1/0 has a high BER (that is, the primary link's quality deteriorates). To resolve this issue, configure bit-error-triggered route switching (that is, on DeviceA's GE 0/1/0, enable CRC bit error detection, enable bit error detection, set BER thresholds for determining link quality, and enable IS-IS to adjust the interface's cost value based on the interface's link quality information). When the primary link's BER exceeds a certain threshold, IS-IS dynamically adjusts the cost value of the link's interface, switching traffic to the backup link.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:

  1. Configure basic IS-IS functions on each device.

  2. Enable BFD globally on each device.

  3. Configure a large cost on DeviceA's GE 0/1/8 so that traffic preferentially travels along link T.

  4. On each interface of each device, enable bit error detection and set BER thresholds for determining link quality.

  5. On each interface of each device, enable IS-IS to adjust the interface's cost based on the interface's link quality information.

Data Preparation

To complete the configuration, you need the following data:

  • IP address of each interface on each device

  • NET of each device

  • Level of each device

  • Cost of each interface on each device

Procedure

  1. Configure an IP address for each interface. For details, see Configuration Files.
  2. Configure basic IS-IS functions.
